Frequently Asked Questions

How is Cerena different from the other modern CBD brands out there?

We love this question. There are four key elements that make us different:

USDA Organic. In an unregulated industry, it's more important than ever to instill trust with consumers, especially with respect to their health. We've insisted since the beginning to partner with farms, processors, and co-manufactures who follow strict USDA guidelines. We take our CBD manufacturing seriously.

Vapor extraction. We extract our certified organic hemp using vapor extraction, the cleanest and most effective method available. Fewer than 5 percent of all hemp (CBD) brands use clean vapor extraction because it’s more expensive than ethanol or C02 and as a result, a little richer in active compounds too.

Terpene focus. This is one of the key benefits of our clean vapor extraction method, it preserves the plant’s natural terpenes (think of them as essential oils) providing a higher concentration compared to other modern CBD brands. We’ll prove it, check out our batch results and compare them with others.

Slow hemp. We believe in learning from those who came before us. We believe in learning from the plants. We believe it’s all a journey. We believe in finding new ways to work that prioritize the planet. We believe in finding new ways to work that prioritize the planet. We believe in iterative research and holistic hemp product development. Because of this, our go-to-market time for holistic cannabis products is slower than most and we at Cerena are proud of it.

I am seeing CBD everywhere. What is it exactly?

CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the many cannabinoids created by the hemp plant (sources indicate there are 100+ cannabinoids that have been identified). CBD is non-psychoactive, thought to be anti-inflammatory, stress relieving, neuroprotective, and an overall beneficial plant ally when it comes to health and well-being.

What is a cannabinoid?

Cannabinoids are compounds derived from the hemp plant (sources indicate there are 100+ cannabinoids that have been identified). Scientists have recorded that they believe the role of cannabinoids is to keep the body and its system in balance with respect to the environment. For more information, read our “What is Cannabidiol (CBD)” blog.

What are the benefits of CBG?

CBG is short for cannabigerol, and though it is another powerful compound in the cannabinoid family, it’s also the precursor to all other cannabinoids. While CBG has not been studied as extensively as restorative CBD, empirical evidence points to its therapeutic potential to relieve inflammation, neurodegeneration, and acute ailments, just to name a few.

While further study is needed, scientists have said it may be more potent and have more of an affinity with receptors in our ECS than CBD. In a 2018 in-vitro study, CBG was associated with increased neuroprotection and helped mitigate oxidative stress (stressed out cells).

Alivio, our recovery formula, has a generous 2:1 ratio of CBG which equates to an effective 8mg of CBG per half dropper serving.

What are the benefits of CBN?

CBN is short for cannabinol — it is most commonly found in older hemp plants, as it is a by-product of THC oxygenation and decomposition (don't worry, CBN is non-psychoactive and won't get you "high."). According to Steep Hill, a leading cannabis and hemp testing facility that also frequently advises legislators at a local and national level, CBN is linked to improved REM sleep, pain and inflammation reduction, and for its free-radical fighting antioxidant quality.

Our Nocturno CBD sublingual drop sleep formula has a generous 4:1 ratio of CBN which equates to an effective 5mg of CBN per half dropper serving.

What's the difference between hemp and cannabis?

In our experience, the terms hemp and cannabis are used colloquially to differentiate between psychoactive and non-psychoactive plants. Hemp usually refers to a non-psychoactive plant and cannabis typically features a higher percentage of psychoactive THC.

Scientifically speaking, Cannabis is a genus of plants and indica, sativa, and ruderalis are species. Hemp is one type of sativa plant, so it is technically a type of cannabis. Easy, right?

Will CBD make me feel "high?"

CBD is inherently non-psychoactive and will not alter your perception or create a feeling of being "high." In fact, not only will restorative CBD products likely improve your connected awareness, the less than 0.3% THC available in our formulas will accelerate these effects through what is known as the entourage effect. Nothing in isolation is greater than the sum of its parts and low concentrations of THC create a more potent solution compared to formulas without it.

Will the less than 0.3%THC cause me to fail a drug test?

Yes, no, and maybe. Though less than 0.3% THC won't create a feeling of being "high", with continued use, it can build up in your system and as a result, cause THC to register under analysis.

The real question at hand should be "Does my employer understand the benefits of using a full-spectrum CBD solution versus a recreational high THC indulgent?"

We believe this conversation will continue to improve for the better and over time, most employers will support the nuance in favor of their employees health and well-being.

Does full-spectrum CBD really make a difference?

Yes! Full-spectrum CBD oils represent a broader spectrum of what makes hemp so special. Isolates, on the other hand, are subjected to further processing of the full-spectrum oil, ultimately removing all hemp compounds except for CBD. Full-spectrum CBD oil honors the full-spectrum hemp plant from which it came, allowing terpenes and other cannabinoids endemic to the hemp plant to be captured and preserved.

What is "whole hemp extract?"

It’s the embodiment of our organic whole plant / whole health approach. Highly concentrated hemp terpenes and auxiliary cannabinoids; it sets our full-spectrum CBD oil apart from other brands.

What's so great about terpenes?

We’re glad you asked, because we are really passionate about them! Terpenes occur naturally in plants giving them their signature smell, taste, and effect. Lavender has terpenes. Hemp has terpenes!

In a lot of hemp and CBD production, it is common practice to strip the hemp plant of the majority of its naturally-occurring terpenes and, at the very most, add terpenes from other plants. At Cerena, our vapor extraction process preserves the hemp plant’s natural terpenes in a way that CO2 and ethanol aren't capable. (Yes, this means our extracts taste a little like hemp. We’re proud of that — it means the product resembles the plant from which it came.)
